ST. MARC, HAITI

SINCE 1716

Saint Marc is a buzzling City in Central Haiti. It's primarily a Port City because of its coastline and central entry point of the Island. That feature makes it one of the largest Cities between Port-au-Prince and Cap-Haitien. Outside of the busy Port access points it's a fairly chill City, especially compared to Port-au-Prince.

The Town occupies most of its flat areas near the coastlines--surrounded by mountains in its interior, overlooking the Artibonite Valley, which is one of the important battles of the Haitian Revolution from 1791 to1804, the Historical battle was fought at Crete Pierrot near the Artibonite River; where Jean-Jacques Dessalines ravaged the French army led by Donatien-Marie-Joseph de Vimeur, Vicomte de Rochambeau.

The Town is also the site of Palais de la Belle Rivière, a palace built from 1816 to 1820 by Henri Christophe, housing the urban legend of 365 doors and 52 windows.

The Town was first settled in 1716, then in 1720, a group of French explorers and missionaries came upon the settlement and later erected a Chapel on April 25, the feast day of Saint Mark the Evangelist. They named the place "Saint-Marc" in his honor.
